"Birth matters. It brings us into being, on many levels." ~Ananda Lowe
Placenta Encapsulation Methods
There are two methods of placenta encapsulation: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and RAW
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used for 5000 years. The placenta is steamed with certain herbs and then dehydrated and put into capsules. Steaming kills any bacteria, but doesn't remove or destroy any hormones. The herbs help bring out the hormones and benefits. RAW encapsulation is when the placenta is simply cleaned and dehydrated before being put into capsules. With each placenta encapsulation I do I also include a keepsake made from the umbilical cord. This is a great way to remember your birth and can be shaped into several different shapes, including a heart. |
Placenta Cubes
Placenta cubes are a great way to consume your placenta without having to swallow pills.
To make placenta cubes the placenta is cleaned and cut into 1" by 1" cubes and then wrapped in individual pieces. The cubes are then frozen and you can use one each day to make a smoothie. Since the placenta is still in its raw form you will have all the great benefits.
If you are anemic this is a great way to get an immediate effect right after birth. It can help with postpartum hemorrhaging, and also to increase milk supply and energy levels.

Safety
Safety and health are most important! I am fully trained in food safety and hold a current Texas food handlers card. I have also completed a bloodborne pathogens course for placenta encapsulation specialists. I am very particular about my disinfection process. Every surface and utensil used is cleaned before, during and after the preparation so as to prevent cross contamination. All reusable equipment is disinfected using a 10% bleach solution and fully immersed for 20 minutes. Everything is then rinsed to remove any bleach residue. This protocol is the standard required by the EPA and OSHA and is designed to kill STDs and bloodborne pathogens. I take pride in my education and safety protocols and also in being transparent and honest with my business, so please don't hesitate to ask any questions. Feel free to contact me for a breakdown of my exact protocol.
For your safety, I do not encapsulate placentas that have been sent to pathology. It's important to know your hospitals release policy if you will be delivering in a hospital. If your placenta is sent to pathology, there is no guarantee your placenta will be kept at the proper temperature or that it wasn't exposed to chemicals or preservatives. Also, there is a small possibility that your placenta could be accidentally switched with someone else's placenta. Proper transportation and refrigeration is also important. The placenta can colonize bacteria and harbor viruses if it is not handled properly, including storage and transportation. |
