Christian Tarot Reading
So you may be asking....what is the Tarot?
The Tarot is a deck of cards that contains 56 cards. It includes the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana and includes four suits. Though the origins of the Tarot aren't 100% clear and known, we know that the deck originated in the Mediterranean region in the late Middle Ages/early Renaissance. The four suites represent four classes: the wands for peasants, the cups for clergy, the pentacles for the merchants and the swords for nobility. The remaining cards, known as the 22 trumps represent the archetypal characters from Medieval morality and mystery plays. It is thought that the Tarot deck was used for divination by the Egyptians first. However, the most well known and popular Tarot deck, the classic Waite Smith Tarot was produced in the late 1800's by A.E. Waite and Pamela Coleman Smith. A.E. Waite was a devout Christian Hermeticist and his Marian devotion can be clearly seen the beautiful Ace of Cups Tarot card. Later, with the rise of Neo-Paganism, many sought to enforce the fantastical claims of Egyptian origins of the Tarot. |
The Major Aracana can help us to look at major spiritual life lessons. The word "Arcana" comes from the word "Arcanum" which means mystery. We must navigate these mysteries that are life lessons. The Fool represents us (each and every one of us). Through life we encounter lessons, just like The Fool encounters all the Archetypes. Some of the lessons expressed by the Major Arcana include: creativity from The Empress, wisdom from The Hermit, organization from The Emperor, and surrender from The Hanged Man.
As previously mentioned, the four suites represent four classes, but they also correspond to the four elements discovered by Medieval Alchemists, which relate to direction and also to Archangels. As with other holistic healing, working with the four Elements can be rewarding and can be used for healing, wellbeing and self-awareness.
