"Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." ~Elizabeth Stone
Placenta Services
Placentophagy, the ingestion of the placenta, has been practice for thousands of years. The Chinese have upheld the value of the placenta for the postpartum recovery process. The placenta is thought to be rich in nutrients and full of life energy. Pregnancy and childbirth is hard on the body and placentophagy helps to return the lost nutrients, iron and protein lost during the birth process.
Consuming your placenta has many benefits and is a safe way to help your body transition from pregnancy back to its non pregnant state. The placenta is the only organ the body creates and expels. It is made by you and contains your vitamins, minerals and hormones. It is a very special organ because it is the one link between mother and baby. It provides the baby with all the important nutrients it needs. The placenta passes lots of things from mother to baby and in this process it also retains some of the hormones. After birth, the placenta still contains all these awesome hormones and the process of encapsulation is a great way to reintroduce those hormones back into your system and help with all the postpartum changes. |

Safety
Safety and health are most important! I am fully trained in food safety and hold a current Texas food handlers card. I have also completed a bloodborne pathogens course for placenta encapsulation specialists. I am very particular about my disinfection process. Every surface and utensil used is cleaned before, during and after the preparation so as to prevent cross contamination. All reusable equipment is disinfected using a 10% bleach solution and fully immersed for 20 minutes. Everything is then rinsed to remove any bleach residue. This protocol is the standard required by the EPA and OSHA and is designed to kill STDs and bloodborne pathogens. I take pride in my education and safety protocols and also in being transparent and honest with my business, so please don't hesitate to ask any questions. Feel free to contact me for a breakdown of my exact protocol.
For your safety, I do not encapsulate placentas that have been sent to pathology. It's important to know your hospitals release policy if you will be delivering in a hospital. If your placenta is sent to pathology, there is no guarantee your placenta will be kept at the proper temperature or that it wasn't exposed to chemicals or preservatives. Also, there is a small possibility that your placenta could be accidentally switched with someone else's placenta. Proper transportation and refrigeration is also important. The placenta can colonize bacteria and harbor viruses if it is not handled properly, including storage and transportation. |
